In Whose Best Interests?
Zoe Picton-Howell is a PhD researcher at University of Edinburgh, School of Law, in last months of her PhD research which explore how paediatricians make decisions for disabled children and the part law, rights and ethics play in those decisions. Zoe also teaches on the MBCHB Health, Ethics & Society programme at Edinburgh University’s Medical School.
Zoe teaches the Mary Seacole programme with the NHS Leadership Academy and previously taught undergraduates law with the Open University. Zoe is the author of Edinburgh University’s on line course “Law, Rights and Ethics for Paediatrics” and a module author for “Disability Matters”.
As a qualified solicitor Zoe was a partner and Head of Litigation at a London law firm. She also completed a LLM in Human Rights at Glasgow Graduate Law School. Her dissertation, for which she obtained a distinction, asked whether in reality disabled children have human right to education and to healthcare.
Zoe is a lay member of the NICE End of Life Care (Children) Guidelines Writing Committee and was the lay member on the CH-UK Epilespy Child Death Review. Zoe has served on numerous other committees related to child health and rights, working particularly closely with the RCPCH and as a Trustee of the Scottish Alliance for Children’s Rights.
