Suzanne Shale

Suzanne Shale works as an independent consultant in the fields of healthcare ethics, patient safety, and healthcare leadership. She is Ethics Advisor to the NHS England Patient Safety Steering Group and a member of the DH Independent Reconfiguration Panel. During 2013 she chaired the ‘Surgical Never Events Task Force’ on behalf of NHS England and is now a member of the group implementing its major recommendations. A former Oxford University legal scholar with training in counselling, group facilitation and conflict resolution, her consultancy has a strong focus on restoring trust and improving support for patients and professionals following harm in care settings. She presents lectures and masterclasses on trust, disclosure, human factors and patient safety throughout the UK, Australia, Europe and Japan.

Suzanne is the Chair of Action Against Medical Accidents (AvMA). AvMA is the leading organisation for justice and patient safety, and campaigned for many years for a legal duty of candour. She was previously Vice Chair of Compassion in Dying, and Chair of the mental health service provider Umbrella.

Suzanne is the sole author of Moral Leadership in Medicine: Building Ethical Healthcare Organizations (Cambridge University Press 2012).
